RESource E-News

31 March 2008

Welcome

Welcome to April and second term. We recently had a great meeting with a group of teachers who gave feedback on and suggestions for RESource. One request was for more engagement with film, music and DVD especially how these may be used in RE. We have tried to add some in this e-news, especially great resources on Amazing Grace.

What's On

The home site of the movie Amazing Grace contains excellent study resources on William Wilberforce and his struggle against slavery in the British Empire. Approaching the story from different perspectives: biography, history, faith, social justice as it does, and containing film clips, pictures, texts, timelines and photos, this site would be a very valuable addition to a teacher's toolbox.

Another film which very much concerns young people and their struggle for acceptance versus the sometimes impossible demands of family loyalty is The Black Balloon, reviewed by Richard Leonard SJ.

A Quiet Place, a list of Catholic possibilities for retreats or reflection days prepared by Catholic Communications. It is not exhaustive but includes places found in the official directory of the Catholic Church.

Oblate Youth site, Marist Young Adult Ministry and the De La Sallian site offer some insights into what is happening on the youth scene. Also check out the latest on World Youth Day activities in Melbourne.

Easter is the time of year when the Resurrection of Jesus is a particular focus for discussion and questions. An article  by Jesuit Gerard Hughes looks at the gospel accounts and Paul's teaching in a very helpful way. Check also the article of the Creed which refers to the resurrection.

Even the Federal Treasurer's children are in danger of not being able to afford to buy a house according to him. If Wayne Swan's children won't be able to afford a home, how will less privileged Australians cope?
